Bass fishing is a very popular recreational sport in USA and in several countries in Europe. Bass fishing was started as a hobby among humble fisherman workers. Today it has developed so much that it sustains a million dollar industry. The sport involves catching a species of fish known as bass with the help of rods, lures and baits. There are many varieties of bass such as smallmouth bass, largemouth bass, peacock bass and striped bass which are abundant in many lakes and streams in USA. Capturing each variety of bass requires specific skill and fishing gear.Smallmouth bass and peacock bass have the reputation as highly elusive fish species. So anglers take pride in catching these species. Many experienced bass gamers will agree that it is harder to catch smallmouth bass than largemouth bass. The reason is that as smallmouth bass prefers cooler and cleaner water it moves quickly between water bodies and is difficult spot in a particular location. The optimum water temperature for getting smallmouth bass is between 47 degree and 78 degree. Artificial lures can be used for catching smallmouth bass. But the lures should be comparatively smaller, as smallmouth bass eats fish of very small size. The lure size is normally between 1/8 oz and ½ oz. The baits used for catching smallmouth bass include crank baits, soft plastics, spinner baits and jigs. Also, lines with a weight of six to ten pounds are ideal for catching smallmouth fish. One has to keep in mind that smallmouth bass goes deeper to the water body as the temperature rises.Largemouth bass is the game bass that is most in demand, even though it is not actually a bass, because they do not suffer any physical injury in the case of a catch and release environment. Largemouth bass can be caught by using either natural lure or artificial lure. Largemouth bass is active when the water is warm, although they become less active when the temperature rises. To catch largemouth bass, several lures such as crank bait, plastic worm and spinner bait are used. The best time to try catching largemouth bass is during night because that is the time these fish come up for feeding. The optimum temperature for fishing largemouth bass is between 55 degrees and 75 degrees. It is very difficult to catch bass during summer. As the heat increases the water temperature rises and bass moves down the water body in search of cooler environs. It has been observed that anglers who have used natural lures had more success in catching bass than those using artificial lures. To improve the fishing efficiency one has to spend as much time as possible in fishing and in understanding the behaviour of the fish.
